English Language Arts Course Descriptions


9th Grade Literature 
Focusing on a study of literary genres, the student develops initial understanding of both the structure and the meaning of a work of literature. The student develops initial understanding of the way the form of a work of literature affects the meaning of the work and of the process of interpretation of a text. The student reads thoughtfully and purposefully, constantly checking for understanding of the author’s intent and meaning in order to determine a sound interpretation.

10th Grade Literature
Focusing on a study of World Literature, the student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in literature within cultures around the world. The student develops an understanding of the ways the place of origin of a work of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning. The student develops an understanding of literature as both a product of its culture and as a culture-bearer and recognizes the commonalities and differences among works of literature from different times and places in the world.

11th Grade Literature/American Literature 
Focusing on a study of American literature, the student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in American literature. The student develops an understanding of the ways the period of a work of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning.

12th Grade Literature/British Literature 
Focusing on a study of British Literature, the student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of period structures in British literature. The student develops an understanding of the ways the period of a work of literature affects its structure and how the chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning.

Technical College Readiness English  
TCRE is designed to meet the needs of students who have passed Ninth Grade Literature and Composition, have passed American Literature and Composition or are concurrently enrolled in American Literature and Composition while taking this course.  Technical College Readiness English will emphasize reading comprehension, identifying main ideas, making inferences, and distinguishing between direct statements and supporting ideas. The course will emphasize sentence structure skills. This course will provide an opportunity for students to review reading and writing skills needed for success in Technical College.

ESOL English I
This course incorporates both the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the GSE for English Language Arts. English 10 credit may be given for this course.

ESOL English II
This course incorporates both the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the GSE for English Language Arts. English 12 credit may be given for this course.
